The Advantages of NOT Having a Boat Dock

As nice as it would be to have a boat dock here at the resort, our customers are still enjoying the ability to beach their boats easily and safely along the shore below our cabins. Our shoreline is one of the few areas of Lake Whitney that is not rocky. We have a smooth sand and mud combination that is perfectly suited to beaching boats. It's a short walk up the hill to the cabins from the shore, allowing guests to go back and forth to their boats throughout their stay.This photo was taken 8/01/11 with the water level at 519.17 or 13.83 below normal. Launching is not a problem at Lofers Bend Campground just over a mile from the resort. Still plenty of water and plenty of fun!

Lake Whitney Water Levels

It seems like we fight a never ending battle with the media. Whether it's low water, high water, or just right water, the press always wants to use scare tactics to create a story. Here are the facts:

1. The lake levels are not in any way too low for boating on the lake. Current levels can be seen at http://www.swf-wc.usace.army.mil/whitney/ . Today we are 11.5 feet below normal, but there is still 90 feet of deep water on our end of the lake.

2. We see levels of 11-13 feet below normal almost every summer. Our guests have been launching boats and we have been renting our boats with no difficulty at all.

3. Keep in mind that Lake Whitney originally was built for a level much lower than the current normal. What that means is that in some places there are ramps that "reappear" as the level goes down.

4. The top 13 feet of water in this lake is managed by the Brazos River Authority. When the lake reaches 13 feet below normal, then the Corps regains control and usually no further water is let out.

5. At the current daily rate of drop in the level (with no rain anywhere on the Brazos) the worst we could anticipate a level about 13 feet below normal by the end of July. A few years ago when the lake reached record setting low levels (far worse than is anticipated this summer) there were still useable boat launches available at Lofer's Bend East campground and at Harbor Master Marina, both just 2 miles from us.

6. The Lofers Bend West campground boat ramp is the only ramp closure posted today on the Corps website. Ramps at the Lake Whitney State Park are closed, as are a couple of private ramps. These are short ramps that are often closed during summer months.

7. The lower water levels actually create a safer boating environment in some cases by exposing sand bars and stumps at the water's edge that are often hidden hazards at normal levels.

8. Lower water gives a unique opportunity to explore the shore on foot. Hiking is now possible from our resort all the way to Lofer's Bend park more than a mile to the west and well into the Towash Creek area to the east.

Mel's Steakhouse

I don't get to spend too much time outside the kitchen on busy restaurant nights, but when I do it's so gratifying to hear the comments from customers about our food. Last night I was told that our steaks are better than Ruth's Chris, but at an affordable price! Another gentleman said he would rather eat here than even at the famous Perini Ranch Steakhouse in Buffalo Gap.

We may have a small "Mom & Pop" resort and restaurant, but we have always felt it was important to serve the best food and provide the best hospitality we possibly could. To have our food compared to such world renowned establishments makes us think we're accomplishing that goal.

We owe a great deal to our restaurant team who share those goals and make it possible. Thanks guys! Keep up the good work.

Dirty Jobs at Arrowhead

I think we should have left this job for Mike Rowe!
We take customer service seriously around here. When last weekend's guests in Cabin #17 said they thought it was a bit too warm in the cabin, we did not just write it off to the fact that they might have turned the A/C unit too high on a humid day, causing it to freeze up. Nor did we assume that the fact that they had been outside in the heat all day at the cliffs and were sunburned was the only reason they were warm.

Instead we took action. Off to Home Depot we went for additional blow-in attic insulation made from recycled paper products. The company's marketing department did a great job convincing us that it was environmentally sound, easy to install, and not itchy like fiberglass. We brought home a pallet loaded with 36 bags weighing 21 pounds each, the nifty blower machine they loan you, and 100 feet of hose. (Dear, Greenie Whatever Insulation Co., you might want to mention in the fine print that this stuff is a tad messy.)
With help from our new part time maintenance guy Steven, we set out at 8:30 this morning to make the biggest mess out of Cabin 17 possible. (Dear Kirk Family arriving this weekend, don't worry, we're pretty good at cleaning up our messes.)

It took Mindy and me about four hours to vacuum, dust, vacuum, dust, vacuum, and dust until everything was in good shape again. And guess what? It feels cooler already!

Goodbye Joey

Yesterday was Joey's last day here at Arrowhead. He came here as a week old baby and leaves as a handsome young 2 year old colt.

Our old horse Hoover passed away a few months before Joey was born, so he came at a time when all of us -- guests and staff alike, needed a little horse uplifting. Joey certainly provided that. He brought smiles and taught us all a thing or two.

It's a shame that Hoover wasn't here to help teach the youngster how to be the best horse around. If he had, here's what I think he might have said to Joe as he left yesterday to start his new life :

1. Play a lot, but play nice.
2. Keep learning. You are never too old to learn a new trick.
3. Work is fun if you approach it with the right attitude.
4. Always give more than what is asked of you.
5. Take naps.
6. Enjoy the simple pleasures life offers-- like drinking Coke.
7. Be gentle.
8. Make people laugh-- they'll treat you better.
9. Don't be afraid to venture beyond your comfort zone.
10. Always have a friend who is wiser than yourself-- and don't forget to heed their advice.

The Real Deal

It's Just a Little Rain

This was taken during Thursday night's storms that passed through here. It was incredible to witness the power and fury, followed by the sun breaking through the rain still falling on the lake. If you've never been here during spring and summer showers you don't know what you've been missing so we thought we would share.

Most of our rain events this time of the year come from the west, which means they come across the lake. That affords us and our guests a front row seat for a show of cloud to lake lightening strikes, changing surface conditions on the water, and curtains of rain dancing their way across the horizon. All of that is followed by an encore of glistening sunshine (or moonshine), rainbows (or stars), and the chirping of newly refreshed birds. Picture rabbits, road runners, foxes, and our peacocks coming out of hiding to shake off the drops of water. After a rain, animals seem to see the world in a new light. They step into the sunshine, blink a few times, then start looking for treasures the storm might have brought their way. They get it when we often don't.

We sometimes allow the threat of rain to dampen not only the ground, but our spirits. We allow the weather forecast to alter our plans of spending quality time with family and friends. We allow fear to replace hopefulness. It's just a little rain, but the bounty it brings is something to be relished not cursed.

The Rest of the Algae Story

Lake Whitney made the front page of the Ft. Worth paper today and we'd like to pass along some additional information to correct a few things in their story.

Here's the article with my corrections and comments in red.

In some parts of Possum Kingdom Lake, real estate agent and fishing guide Mike Hallford estimates seeing as many as a thousand dead striped bass, victims of a deadly invasion of a microorganism called golden alga.

Similar golden-alga horror stories are coming from Lake Whitney, another reservoir that, like Possum Kingdom, is part of the Brazos River system. Doesn't "horror stories" usually apply to tragic human losses or bad B movies?

Altogether, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department conservatively estimates that recent blooms of golden alga have killed 50,900 fish at Possum Kingdom, about 75 miles west of Fort Worth, and 68,900 at Lake Whitney, about 60 miles south of Fort Worth.

Department officials say the kill estimates are conservative because many dead fish are quickly eaten by birds or sink well below the lake surface and can't be counted. What this means is that you shouldn't expect to see massive numbers of dead fish in the water or on the shore. Nature takes care of the clean up.

The kills are so huge that they are attracting large numbers of pelicans, presumably from Texas' Gulf Coast, to swoop in and feast on the dead fish, said Glenn Lof-gren, who does bookings for fishing guides at Possum Kingdom.

"At one point, you probably saw a couple of hundred" pelicans at the lake, Hallford said. He presumes that the pelicans picked up the scent of dead fish from winds blowing to the south. The pelicans are American White Pelicans that pass through the Lake Whitney area every year as they move from their wintering grounds along the Gulf to their breeding grounds in northern Colorado. You can verify this with the National Geographic Field Guide to Birds of North America, Third Edition p.50. They have stayed a little longer this year due to the abundance of food, but they didn't come here because of some dead fish smell. We live here; there's no smell, and the birds are a joy to watch.

We rank the annual pelican migration right along with the other natural spectacles of spring we are known for: the Monarch butterfly migration, the return of the cattle egrets and purple martins, and of course the bluebonnet and wildflower explosion along the lakeshore.

Foamy shorelines Huh?

Melissa Tidmore, a biologist with the state parks department, said the golden algae are killing "all sizes of fish and many species," including some "big ones."

Hallford said he has seen some dead striped bass that probably weighed as much as 10 pounds. He has also seen dead freshwater drum and gar. Among the fish killed at either Possum Kingdom, Whitney or both are channel catfish, white bass, largemouth bass, sunfish and crappie.

But the biggest numbers of fish killed have been shad, such as gizzard shad and threadfin shad, which the larger "predator" fish feed on. Hallford said that threadfin shad are 3 to 4 inches long and that gizzard shad might run 4 to 12 inches.

Tidmore said that despite considerable research, no method has been found to rid large lakes of the golden alga but that the problem should dissipate as lake temperatures rise. The alga tends to turn the water a tealike color and make it foamy at shorelines, she said. The only place we have seen tea colored water is deep in coves where the water movement is minimal and we have not seen any foam on the lake. We have been monitoring the shoreline here at the resort on an almost daily basis and all we have seen is clean clear water. The lake overall is still the beautiful blue that it always is.

We are seeing foam on the river below the dam-- but that's because they are dumping 17,000 cfs to return the lake to normal level. We have recently received additional water from Possum Kingdom due to heavy rains in that area. The dilution from the excess water should also act to dilute the algae. In 2007 high water levels washed the algae out of Lake Whitney for two subsequent years.

The temperature needed to slow the algae growth is just a few degrees warmer than what we currently have, so the outbreak should not last much longer. The biologist did not stress the fact that the algae is microscopic, so don't picture mucky yellow stuff in the water. It also is not toxic to humans, is not associated with dirty or contaminated water, and poses no threat to swimmers or water sports enthusiasts.

"Once this clears out, I think fishing will be fine," Hallford said. The fishing at Whitney hasn't been all that bad. Take a look at this recent tournament story.

Previous kills

But there's always the fear that the golden alga could return. Possum Kingdom suffered large golden alga fish kills in 2001. The reservoir was restocked with more fish, but a new wave of golden alga struck in 2003.

An alga invasion can put a serious damper on the economy around affected lakes, hurting the income of fishing guides, bait shops, motels, restaurants and service stations. It would seem that front page stories that provide the positives along with the negatives would serve to soften the effects on the local economy.

A Texas A&M University study found that the 2001 outbreak at Possum Kingdom significantly hurt businesses around the lake and resulted in a 57 percent drop in visitors to Possum Kingdom State Park.

Hope-y, Change-y Thing

I've been thinking about Ms. Palin's use of that term recently and even though we don't pay too much attention to Washington political banter, her turn of phrase amused me.

We are surrounded by hope and change. It's inherent in nature. Picture the squirrel constantly gathering food. Picture the wren busy buildings nests or the daffodils pushing through the frost. If that's not hope, I don't know what is. Those same drives are built into us as well, we just have to tap into them.

We've seen hope in the faces of our guests and restaurant customers for weeks. (Mostly they are hopeful that the sun will shine tomorrow!) We can hear the hopefulness in the voices of callers looking for summer vacation cabins.

As for change, we have seen change in people. We are all spending more cautiously, thinking things through, whether we are facing true economic hardships ourselves, or just concerned that we might in the future. The best change we've seen has been that people are more focused on each other. It seems to have become more important to spend time talking with one another than spending money. Sharing life's little adventures has become a higher priority than doing trendy things.

As 2010 moves forward at what feels like lightening speed, our wish is that hope and change find you. We hope to see you here at Arrowhead this year and we trust that whatever changes are in store for you will be met with courage and optimism.

As for us, that hope-y, change-y thing is working out just fine. The sun is shining, the daffodils are about to bloom, the wrens are already busy, and this morning there are about 50 robins hanging out in front of the office. Before you know it we'll be waiting for the peaches to ripen. We'll be happy to share.

Thanksgiving at Arrowhead Resort

For many years it was a family tradition to spend Thanksgiving at Arrowhead Resort. Waking up in the country on Thanksgiving morning and spending the day cooking a wonderful dinner with family and friends, and ending the day with the Dallas Cowboys was always the perfect recipe for Thanksgiving Day. Such a trip isn't in the cards this year since my move to New Jersey, but if I were still in Texas, I would prepare most of the meal in advance, take a defrosted turkey to Melinda to season and Gary to deepfry, and settle in for a family Thanskgiving at Arrowhead. Just because I can't be there doesn't mean its too late for you to get a cabin for the holiday. It would be a Thanksgiving to remember!

End of Summer

Another busy season has come and gone. This makes 12 for us! It has been a summer of economic worries for the whole country, low lake levels for Whitney, and concerns over the H1N1 flu. Through it all we have enjoyed seeing those of you who shared the summer with us. We hope that however brief your visit was that it brought peace, comfort, and joy to your life. We truly believe that we have a little slice of heaven and love sharing it with you.

If you didn't make it this summer please know that we missed you. I was thinking just yesterday about the families that we did not see. It's almost as if there's no real closure to our summer without seeing some of you who have become like extended family to us. You are in our thoughts and we hope to see you soon.

The leaves are already falling and sometimes in the early morning I can almost smell the change of seasons. The quiet is settling in and as much as we like sharing summer, we LOVE sharing fall! Hope to see you soon!

A word or two about online reviews

Ever get a punch in the gut when you least expect it? That's how we feel today. Someone left a nasty review about us on one of those review sites. There's no telling what actually set them off. Maybe they spent more money than they intended. Maybe the kids screamed all the way home. The bothersome part is that their review included false statements.

We can take valid criticism. Come on, give it to us. If you stay with us and something is wrong with our cabins or our service we EXPECT to hear about it at the time it happens. AC not cool enough? Tell us and we'll do our darnedest to fix it. Can't get the VCR to play? Call 254-580-3044 and we'll come running. It's what we do, but we can't read minds and we can't fix something for you after you leave.

If you feel the need to share your experience here with the world, good or bad, our only request is that you not exaggerate either way and that you give the whole picture. Give people a balanced view.

These people ate our chocolate chip cookies, fresh cinnamon rolls, and got a special brushing session with Dixie and Crystal, but do you think they mentioned any of that in their review? How could they not have liked those cookies? And Dixie & Crystal are downright insulted to have been left out.

We not only get our feelings hurt by inaccurate sucker punches, but it hurts our livelihood. This place is our life. We give it EVERYTHING we've got. So if you've got something to say, please say it to us first.

Concerns About the Lake Levels-- Come on out the water's fine.

We are getting lots of calls about the lake levels so I thought I'd answer some questions here. Keep in mind that Whitney is 108' deep at normal level. Twelve feet under normal means there's still 96' of water in the main body of the lake.

1. Can we launch boats? Gary has gone to launch our 21' pontoon boat as I type this. There have been a few ramp closings around the lake, but many are still open.

2. Can we swim in the lake? Several public swim areas have been closed due to safety reasons, but guests staying at Arrowhead have access to a wonderful area, perfectly suited for swimming-- low boat traffic & no sudden drop offs.

3. Are you still renting canoes? Yup. Water levels on the lake don't affect our canoe rentals because we are on wide open lake.

4. Can we leave our boats in the water? Lower lake levels are actually better for guests with boats at Arrowhead. Since we don't have docks, our guests beach their boats and tie them up. Lower water levels have exposed any potential hazards that were previously submerged and leave quite a nice stretch of shore for beaching boats.

5. Can you still see the lake from the cabins? Our cabins are situated roughly 200 yards from the water at the current level and no views of the lake have been changed.

Sweet Mimosa

The smell of mimosa blooms in the quiet of the night is one of my favorite summer things. I don't know if they actually release more scent after dark or if I am just finally still enough to notice.

We have three mimosas on the property, one at the Bunkhouse, one at Cabin #3, and a rogue growing in a large pot at our personal deck which refused to be removed so many times that we finally left it alone and let it live. I guess someday we'll cut the pot away.

This week we lost 1/2 of the one at #3. A windstorm on Tuesday night broke two of the four main trunks. Gary carefully trimmed up what was left and we hope it's strong enough to survive. It's always been an interesting looking tree-- mostly hollow with multiple twisted trunks, but now it borders on artistic. And it still smells nice.

Tribute to the Kitchen Staff

We wanted to take a minute to say thank you to the Mel's Steakhouse kitchen staff. We are picky about who we allow into our kitchen family and I am not an easy boss to please.

These folks work tirelessly in a very hot kitchen week after week. They must either be crazy or truly share our passion for serving good food. It's probably a little of both. Even though they are responsible for the quality product we offer, they rarely get to bask in the glow of customer praises or the weekly excitement of converting first-timers to repeaters.

Crystal is our grill chef. She has been with us off and on for more than eight years. Her real job is raising four energetic girls. She has done every job in our kitchen at one time or another, but the grill is where she shines. It's hot. On busy nights the pressure to keep steaks, chops, & grilled seafood coming off the grill perfectly cooked at the appropriate time is intense, but she does it with a quiet smile. Did I mention it's hot? The grill is 2' x 4' of flame-heated ceramic bricks and her only relief from it is reaching into the nearby cooler for more steaks to put on the grill. She is also responsible for food cooked on the stove -- veggies, sauteed mushrooms, and pan seared fish or chicken. It's a big job and she does it almost effortlessly.

Deborah is our prep and fry cook. She works the longest hours in the kitchen, starting on Thursday receiving trucks, toasting croutons, and whipping up that lovely cinnamon butter. Actually, her week starts on Monday morning when she arrives first thing to face the task of draining the fryers and detailing them until spotless, followed by grueling hours of steam cleaning the red tile floor in the kitchen. She hand cuts and breads every piece of catfish, every chicken fried steak, every onion string. She handles hundreds of pieces of catfish for the Friday buffet every week! Her quick zingers keep the dining room staff on their toes, but the quality of food she prepares is testament to her love of the job.

Kelly takes care of the salad bar and desserts so efficiently that to the untrained eye it looks easy. It is anything but. She manages the production and supply of almost 50 food items and does it while maintaining spotless conditions in her area. She is the kitchen staff member most visible to dining room guests and she always has a smile for everyone. She is first and foremost a mom to Haley and Jenna , but we are thankful to have her as part of our family on Friday and Saturday nights.

Denise is our Saturday expediter. That means she sets up every plate in preparation of the food being cooked. When a steak comes off the grill or a chicken fried tenderloin comes out of the fryer, Denise has a warm, decorated plate waiting for it with steak knife, side dish, and accompaniments in place. Her job allows Crystal and Deborah to focus on creating their food magic without worrying about the finished plates. Denise has been with us for seven years. She is currently the Bakery Manager at the Hillsboro Walmart. We are extremely proud of her accomplishments there, but happy that she chooses to continue as part of our family here on weekends.

Donald keeps clean plates, soup bowls, silverware, glassware, and cookware flowing. His speed and efficiency are hard to fathom. We simply could not operate effectively without Donald, and on the very rare occasions when he was not here we all suffered. He works in a kitchen full of women and does so with quiet humor and grace.

That's our crew. We don't thank them often enough, but without them Mel's Steakhouse would not be possible.
